Have you ever been pressured to be different? To be better? To stand out?
From a young age we are taught that in order to succeed in life, we need to be better than others. That for us to stand out at whatever we do, we should make it into a competition and crush anything that comes our way. However at some point we end up just trying to fit in. Why is that? Why is it that we go from one end to the other?
Naturally we try to fit in so we can relate to others and feel accepted. And it’s a good feeling right? To be part of something and to not feel lonely. There is no shame in enjoying that feeling, but is it worth it to sacrifice the beauty within us to own it? Well, allow me to say that the feeling is way better once you earn it by being yourself. And believe me, yourself will stand out.
Many define a person that stands out as someone of exceptional ability or high quality. Those are some high expectations right? Recently I encountered this question: How do I stand out? I felt pressured to give a list of things where I had exceptional abilities in order to impress the listeners.
So I came to a conclusion when I needed to answer this question for myself. I realized the way that I stand out from a crowd is by being kind to those who are hurt, by showing love to those that are different than me and by taking care of those who are in need. In order to understand this I had to acknowledge the fact that standing out doesn’t necessarily mean being way better at something than others, but it can also mean doing things differently. Once this concept sinks in, pressure drops down and being remarkable fits with the abilities you already have.
When we feel comfortable putting these abilities into action in our daily lives, we can take these qualities to the work environment. The moment you believe in yourself, know your strengths and weaknesses, and feel comfortable in your work is when you will naturally stand out above the rest.
Let’s take advantage of this opportunity and improve ourselves, so that we can end up making this world better to live in. Take the qualities you already have and utilize them for other’s benefit. It’s also a great moment to get to know ourselves better and see the potential within us.
